Is Modern Warfare 3 trying to take advantage of recent terrorist attacks?

Of course we've all seen radical advertising techniques in the past. And as the years go by, it seems like the more 'edgy' the content the better it sells. Not in all instances, but more often with the big hit titles that can afford to take a gamble.

Controversy has erupted lately on whether or not MW3 is trying to take advantage of this, with their latest game involving attacks on London and NYC. But it's the Russians attacking this time and not quite the terrorists. Their currently saying they're not too worried about it since in their game it's a full blown Russian invasion, and not a terrorist attack. European members were especially upset when in-game imagery of a subway train attack seemed to resemble the suicide bombings that had occurred in London on July 7, 2005.

Only time will tell whether injecting this type of content will help or hurt sales. But seeing how pre-orders are currently already outselling Black Ops, I'd have to say it's probably going to help.

Modern Warfare 3 : Xbox vs. PS3

Robert Bowling has assured us this go around that MW3 on both consoles will be virtually identical. No differences in frame-rate, how the game plays, or any special features. Bowling also specifies that there will be no degradation of quality regardless of which console you choose. PS3 users are still a bit on the optimistic side comparing connection issues. As in the past 360 users have always seemed to have a more fresh, streamlined approach when it came to multiplayer... compared to PS3 users that would more often get booted from games or end up with laggy sessions.

Information regarding whether 360 users will continue to receive map packs before PS3 users still seems to be an open question. Robert Bowling's official tweet -

"Originally Posted by Robert Bowling No, no the experience in terms of frame rate, game play experience, features, visual fidelity is going to be the same across Xbox 360 and PS3. From Day 1 in development we focused on making sure that both platforms are getting equal time and are at the same quality."

Hardened Edition Confirmed For Modern Warfare 3

It wasn't a surprise after both MW2 and Black Ops were available in Hardened Editions. Why not add Modern Warfare 3 to the list ? As expected, Infinity Ward announced they're preparing a collector's edition for MW3. Visually, it's looking like an ominous black box with the Modern Warfare 3 logo on the front. It also appears thick enough for IW to fit in all sorts of goodie extras inside. Looking back at history, the Black Ops Hardened Edition came with a medal, an Avatar outfit, and bonus co-op maps. The Hardened MW2 contained an art book as well as a download voucher for the original Call of Duty. Both cost $79.99 on release. Expect a similar price and amount of extras for the Hardened Edition of Modern Warfare 3. Infinity Ward said details on this edition's contents will be displayed at Call of Duty XP. XP is a new two-day convention that takes place in September. Activision also plans to show off the game's multiplayer for the first time. Tickets went on sale last week.

Modern Warfare 3 on track to beat records

Even during a bad economy, any thought of Call of Duty's franchise to sink along with it can be quicklly dismissed.

We have word that pre-orders for this November’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are tracking “significantly” ahead of last year’s Black Ops.

And, of course, Black Ops is a world-record breaking best seller.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders are already tracking significantly ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops at the same time last year.

From a major retailer : “We know that the Call of Duty brand and franchise has the most amazing fan-base and we’ve got some great surprises lined up for those who pre-order with us. We’re looking forward to an incredible launch on November 8th."

Modern Warfare 3 Teased for June Announcement
Activision's next Modern Warfare money machine will likely be announced soon.

Everybody knows that Activision is working on Modern Warfare 3, it's just a matter of when the publisher decides to announce it. According to a teaser page in the latest issue of OPM, that announcement will be made in early June, and probably at E3.

Due to the legalities of posting a picture of a scanned magazine, the teaser is not present in this article. However, I can describe it pretty well for you. It's a big-ass green "3" on a black background. A quote below the "3" says: "The biggest game in the world returns." If this page is not referring to Modern Warfare 3, someone at OPM needs to be flung into space and I'll eat my hat.

The issue goes on sale on June 8. E3 2011 runs from June 7-9. Basically, this could mean that Modern Warfare 3 is going to be announced and shown off at E3. Are you excited yet?

Activision puts out a Call of Duty game every year because each release earns the publisher an entire vault of those bags with dollar signs on them full of cash. November 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops was estimated to have generated $360 million on its release day alone. Modern Warfare 3 has the potential to replicate this figure, or possibly put it to shame. That's if it's actually launching in 2011, which isn't yet confirmed.

Notably, this will be the first Modern Warfare title to have been developed without the founding members of Infinity Ward at the helm. Infinity Ward created the Call of Duty series, though Activision handed it off to Treyarch to keep the games flowing yearly with titles such as Black Ops and Call of Duty: World at War. Infinity Ward was decimated in 2010 by many, many departures after company founders Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired in a big to-do, though the studio is still said to be a part of Activision's stable.

Modern Warfare 3 is rumored to be a prequel focusing on popular character Simon "Ghost" Riley, and possibly a team effort by the remains of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, and Raven Software. In about a month, we should know for sure.
